How to Read the COT Report: A Step-by-Step Guide for Traders

The Commitments of Traders (COT) report is a weekly publication by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) that outlines the net positions of different market participants in the futures market. By analyzing the COT report, retail traders can peek behind the curtain to see how institutional "smart money" is positioned across major assets like currencies, gold, and oil.

Understanding the Market Participants

The COT report categorizes traders into three main groups:

  1. Commercial Traders (Hedgers): These are multinational corporations and producers who use the futures market to hedge their physical business risk (e.g., a gold mining company selling gold futures). They are usually counter-trend traders.

Analyzing the balance between speculative and hedging positions helps retail traders align with prevailing institutional flows.
